Boating is one of our nation’s favorite pastimes. More than 83 million of us each year are happiest when cruising our nation’s oceans, rivers and lakes. If you ask a boater, it’s the best way to spend time with family and friends. But this much-loved activity has a serious side – risk. When boating, there are potential hazards to you, your crew and other boaters. Boat safety is a huge responsibility that all good captains take seriously. That’s why the crew at Snag-A-Slip wants to help you understand and find the boating courses that are right for you – so every day on your boat is a perfect day!

Do I have to take boating courses?

It’s important to be properly educated on, and always follow, boat safety best practices. First rate captains adhere to responsible boat operation, etiquette, and the rules of the waterways. Plus, law enforcement officers patrol waterways to ensure everyone’s boating experience is safe and enjoyable. In the United States, more than 40 states have educational course requirements for operating a boat. That’s why you’ll want to follow your state’s laws and guidelines regarding boat license and education obligations.

What will I get out of a boating course?

Boat safety courses can make boating more enjoyable for everybody. But the most obvious benefit is that you’ll become a better, safer boater. Even veteran captains should continue to expand their knowledge. New to boat ownership?  Then a boating course and/or certificate is a great first step toward being prepared on the water.

We also know that education can save lives. According to Health News Florida™, “Training helps reduce the chance of accidents…74 percent of accidents involved boat operators who had not taken a certified safety training course.”

The truth is that great captains are eager to learn and never stop learning, because there are so many different aspects of boating safety. New boaters should take courses to learn how to be safe, and experienced boaters should take them to stay safe. When armed with education, you can enjoy your boat knowing you’re able to handle any situation you might encounter.
