If you’re looking for a unique summer experience this boating season, sail over to Annapolis, MD to enjoy the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre.
The Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre (ASGT) is a complete outdoor community theatre lead by local volunteers. While there are many other theatres in the Baltimore-Annapolis area that occasionally present shows outside, what sets ASGT apart is that all of their performances are outdoors.
Each summer, ASGT chooses three different musicals to be performed throughout the season. The first show of the season will be Crazy For You. Based on the 1930 musical, Girl Crazy, this musical tells the story of a city boy who meets small town girl. Young New York banker Bobby Child is sent to Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on a rundown theatre. Upon his arrival, Bobby falls for the spunky Polly Baker – the theater owner’s daughter. Bobby vows to win Polly’s heart and save the theatre. This show will be running from May 23rd through June 15th.
Second on the summer lineup is Songs For a New World. According to the official ASGT website, the original playwright, Jackson Robert Brown, transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge, 57 stories above Fifth Avenue. Audience members get to meet an array of characters ranging from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto, to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs the man of her dreams… and a soulless marriage. Songs For a New World will be playing from June 27th to July 20th.
Finally, the summer season will conclude with Mamma Mia! ABBA’s hit songs tell the hilarious story of a young woman’s search for her birth father. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. The story-telling magic of ABBA’s classic songs propels this love story through laughter and friendship, creating an unforgettable show. You won’t want to miss this hit show, running from August 1st through September 1st.
For a fun, magical, unique way to experience downtown Annapolis, make sure you get tickets to one of these shows this summer. All shows will be Thursdays through Sundays at 8:30 pm.

“The Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre is such a great hole-in-the-wall venue not many people know about. The stage is located right off the docks and is maybe a 2 minute walk from where your boat will be! The audience is smaller, so it provides an intimate experience with the play and the cast. For most shows, the cast actually sings and dances up the aisles! It is a gem in Downtown Annapolis and a must visit during the summer months.”
